This started out as a conversation with a good friend yesterday: the power of negative space.

in essence, the power of the empty area highlights and enhances the story of the subject (the positive space). A great example of this is the classic image of an athlete - usually there is a space in front of them in the image for them to 'move into'. This is the negative space and allows the motion to be seen.

I might - maybe - have taken this to the extreme...

ive found it really difficult to get the camera out this past week, so today I threw on a different lens and got a different perspective. The result is four great shots today and difficulty choosing which to post.

in the end I've chosen Brian. He's looking a bit healthier today and the warmer weather is certainly helping.

A great sunset deserves great photography. But instead of that you'll need to make do with some iphonography and some playing around with the App Store! There's an almost Gamey feel to the end result, sort of unreal, HDR effect which I've gained from merging a heavily contrasted edit with the original.

Something our local team, Nottingham Forest, are doing is approaching all the local schools to give away free shirts and tickets, possibly hoping enough of them become lifelong fans (and I'm not known for my cynicism). So tonight we went along to pick up said shirt and meet some of the team and had a really good time! "Take a photo of this..", "take a photo of me here..", "let me hold that trophy!" This image is all-in an iphone production. I've taken the shot and then used a few of my favourite applications to tweak the tone levels and add a texture layer. You don't have to smile.

Think about some of the most powerful images you've seen, the really good ones that move you to a different spot: I'm betting the biggest images are the ones where the subject isn't smiling.

Today's Project 365 lesson: never underestimate the quality of light from a normal window.

Catching my girl in a quiet moment, sat on the beanbag by our (North facing) living room window. The shadows are soft, the contrast low, and this works with the pensive look - at least in my opinion. In our living room we have light walls and a glossy floor, so the wrap-around light just feeds the left side of her face, evening out the tones.

The first Saturday of the New Year; a time to relax, to unwind...and pack up all the Christmas baubles, relocate the fish and clear out the smaller fishtank, take old toys to the charity shop and watch Nadal on the telly...

Meanwhile, my girl sat on the sofa playing Minecraft, so I took the chance if a small detail shot. I can't wait until December 31st to find out how the all-absorbing game for both my kids pans out over the next 12 months. Top attraction for the past 3 months, will it last the course?

Project 365 day 2

Day 2 of Project365. I found out this morning that I was watching more: looking for objects or views, trying to consider different perspectives and looking at the ordinary in an in ordinary way. Not intentionally, just a by-product of knowing I wanted to find something to add.

Project 365: the start

I always said I'd never do this....

A couple of years ago a good friend did a year long project, publishing a photo every single day. It challenges you to look outside of the box in order to keep the momentum going. He said it was enjoyable, and at the end he was glad he did it, but some days it was a burden to try and find the inspiration as much as the time. So I always said no, he didn't look like he was enjoying it and I couldn't see the appeal.

And then this morning it just clicked. Or I snapped - however you choose to see it.

To badly quote one of my favourite films, let's see how deep the rabbit hole goes...

Where did March go?? So, April already. Already??? What happened to the first quarter of the year??

So it's been quite busy for me - lots of at-home practicing styles and finishes for some new lighting tools I've bought or adapted over the winter - I think I've burned the goodwill of my children-stroke-models until at least July! My favourite so far is the light globe - great for flooding a room with background light to stop it disappearing behind the subject - but second place is the small barn door attachment for the studio lights (think of the atypical film set light). Speaking of which, I think one of them might need a service, it started playing up midway through the shoot with Colin ( Despite the issues I think we managed to come away with a great variety of shots for the two hours.

The best thing about photography is that feeling of pride when you see one of your shots getting used out in the "wild" - well, twitter* and suchlike.

Cards on the table I'm working with a good friend to produce the first of our specialist card range.

After spending some time on preparing the props, the end photographs turned out better than I could have hoped and the natural thing seemed to be to connect with my friend's custom card making business to provide a range of products. We're meeting up tomorrow to preview the samples and I'm really looking forward to see how they turn out.

Although nearly out of time for Valentine's Day this year, the initial set will make perfect anniversary cards and I'm already working on ideas for Mothers Day (10th March if you're interested!) and Easter cards. The intention will be to produce them in strictly limited numbers, with each photograph individually numbered, to keep with the Artisan philisophy.

So if you're looking for something a little bit different and special, something of a change from the high Street or Supermarket card aisles, we'll be providing a few alternatives for you here - they'll appear on a gallery page soon!

I'd love to hear your feedback, leave me a message through the Contact pages.

Snow Joke What a start to the year! New Year's Resolutions, New Customers, New Web Site! There's been a few late nights and chewed fingernails, let me know your thoughts by signing the Guestbook.

Just getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas break and then the snow comes - it's been absolutely fantastic for photography, if I could only get my circulation into my fingers!

In between it all I've had a few more props arrive through the hands of Royal Mail's finest for a portrait session coming up - one I'm genuinely excited about. Hopefully we'll be able to get it booked over the next couple of weeks whilst we still have dark evenings to help create some moody light effects.Nottingham in the snowWinter HQ IMG_2486
